On Friday 16th of June, the team at Pallas Capital set sail once again, hosting over 40 of our valued clients for an adrenaline fuelled, exclusive afternoon on Sydney Harbour.
Back for its second year, the Pallas Capital TP52 Gold Cup was a 3 nautical mile race featuring seven of Sydney’s finest TP52 high performance yachts – Quest, Smuggler, Highly Sprung, Matador, Zen, First Light and Denali.
Following a brief welcome session at the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, guests were divided into seven teams and given a tour of their boat and crew for the race.
The course was set by the CYCA race official, and light westerly winds on the day remained at a steady 4-9 knots offering pleasant sailing conditions for the teams. Whilst the afternoon’s low winds meant for a less exhilarating competition, it was a race to the finish line for two of the boats, Denali and Matador, with Denali taking the win by just under a minute.
First Light claimed third place, followed by Highly Sprung, Quest, Smuggler and Zen.
The race was followed by a cocktail event and presentation of the winning crew back at the Club by Pallas Capital Executive Director, Mark Spring and President of the TP52 Class Association and Captain of Quest, Craig Neil. Evelyn Vertzagias of Denali, Andrew Wang of Matador and Rob & Jan Pitcher of First Light were all awarded with 1st, 2nd and 3rd trophies, a bottle of French champagne and $200 Zhik gift voucher, and the Pallas Cup was duly filled with French Champagne for a celebratory spray by Hugo Clark.
“We were delighted to welcome our esteemed investors back for the Pallas Cup’s second year, a highly anticipated event which has quickly become a permanent fixture on the team’s calendar,” says Mark Spring, Executive Director, Pallas Capital.
He adds, “It was a well thought-out race plan where the TP52’s tacked up wind in a closely fought battle to the top marks before coming back down the Harbour where the two boats were within 100 metres of each other — only for Denali to pull away slightly to take line honours. An all-round fantastic day and we look forward to hosting the next edition of Pallas Cup in early 2024.”
